Crumbs, dust, and small drips can collect beneath appliances even when the rest of the counter looks clean. Today’s focused reset clears those hidden areas while protecting the countertop and the appliance’s electrical parts.
Your step-by-step countertop reset
- Choose one or two lightweight appliances that you can move safely. Turn each one off, unplug it with dry hands, and let it cool completely. Remove nearby food, dishes, and loose cords from the work area.
- Read the appliance and countertop care instructions. Check for a damaged cord, cracked plug, leaking reservoir, loose part, or unusually hot or scorched area before moving anything. Stop using a damaged appliance and follow the manufacturer’s service guidance.
- Empty or secure removable contents as directed. Lift the appliance by its approved handles or base—never by its cord—and place it on a clean, stable, dry surface. Do not move a heavy, built-in, or awkward appliance by yourself.
- Pick up loose crumbs with a dry cloth, soft brush, or suitable vacuum attachment. Work gently around wall edges and cord paths, and do not push debris into an outlet, appliance vent, or countertop seam.
- Clean the exposed counter with a product approved for its material, applying it to the cloth instead of spraying toward outlets or the appliance. Address dried residue with repeated gentle passes rather than flooding the surface or using a sharp scraper.
- Wipe away cleaner residue as directed and dry the counter completely. If permitted, wipe the appliance’s cool exterior with a lightly dampened cloth, keeping moisture away from vents, controls, plugs, and openings. Return it only when every surface is dry, leaving the required ventilation space and routing the cord safely.
Keep hidden crumbs manageable
Add one easy-to-move appliance to your regular kitchen reset instead of clearing the entire counter at once. Wipe fresh drips promptly, keep cords away from hot or wet areas, and follow each appliance’s separate instructions for removable trays or parts.
Safety note
Never clean an appliance while it is powered, hot, or connected to electricity. Do not immerse an appliance, cord, or plug, and never spray liquid near outlets or electrical openings. Never mix cleaning chemicals or use an unlabeled product. Keep products away from food, children, and pets. Do not strain to move heavy equipment, disturb gas lines, defeat an anti-tip device, or pull an appliance by its cord. If you find a damaged outlet, cord, plug, leak, scorch mark, pest contamination, or suspected mold, stop and seek appropriate qualified guidance before restoring power.
