Crumbs can build up inside a toaster even when the countertop looks clean. Today’s focused reset clears the removable crumb tray and the appliance exterior without putting water or tools inside the toaster.
Your step-by-step toaster reset
- Turn the toaster off, unplug it from the wall, and let it cool completely. Move it to a clear, dry work area away from the sink.
- Read the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and locate the crumb tray. Do not remove any part that is not designed for routine user cleaning.
- Slide out the crumb tray carefully and empty the loose crumbs into the trash. Avoid shaking crumbs near an open flame, hot burner, or other appliance.
- Clean the tray only as the manufacturer directs. If washing is permitted, use mild dish soap and water, then rinse and dry it completely before reinstalling it.
- Hold the cool, unplugged toaster over a trash can and gently tilt it only if the manufacturer allows this. Never insert a knife, fork, brush, or other object into the slots.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft, lightly damp cloth, keeping moisture away from the slots, controls, cord, and plug. Dry the exterior and return the fully dry tray to its correct position.
- Check that the cord and plug are undamaged, place the toaster on a stable heat-resistant surface with clear space around it, and plug it in only after every cleaned part is completely dry.
Keep crumbs from building up
Check the tray regularly based on how often the toaster is used. Emptying it before crumbs become packed in is faster, helps prevent odors, and keeps loose debris from collecting beneath the appliance.
Safety note
Always unplug the toaster and let it cool before cleaning. Never immerse the toaster, spray cleaner into it, reach into the slots, or use a metal object to remove stuck food. Keep water away from the appliance, cord, plug, and outlet. If bread is jammed, the cord is frayed, the plug is damaged, the toaster sparks, or you smell burning after the crumbs are removed, stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s service or replacement guidance.
