Today’s Tip: Clean Your Vacuum Attachments Before the Next Room

Remove trapped dust, hair, and lint from crevice tools, dusting brushes, and upholstery attachments so debris is not carried into the next room.

Published October 27, 2026

Vacuum attachments can hold dust, hair, crumbs, and lint after the main vacuum is put away. Today’s focused reset cleans the removable tools you use most often so they are ready for the next surface or room.

Your step-by-step vacuum-attachment reset

  1. Turn the vacuum off, unplug it, and read the manufacturer’s instructions. Identify only the attachments designed for user removal, and note which parts may be washed and which must remain dry.
  2. Detach the crevice tool, dusting brush, upholstery head, and other approved accessories. Work over a trash bag or washable surface, and inspect each piece for cracks, loose bristles, damaged rollers, or sharp debris before handling it closely.
  3. Tap out loose dust gently, then use a dry microfiber cloth or soft brush to lift lint and hair from outer surfaces, bristle rows, seams, and connection points. Use a blunt manufacturer-approved tool for accessible tangles rather than fingers, knives, pins, or scissors near hidden edges.
  4. Wash only attachments the manufacturer specifically identifies as washable. Use the recommended water temperature and cleaner, keeping nonwashable tools, powered heads, hoses, electrical contacts, and motorized parts completely dry.
  5. Wipe nonwashable attachments with a slightly damp cloth only when their care instructions allow it. Apply any approved product to the cloth instead of spraying the attachment, and keep moisture out of openings, bearings, connectors, and moving parts.
  6. Shake off permitted rinse water, dry the surfaces with a clean towel, and place washable attachments in a well-ventilated area. Reconnect or store every piece only when it is completely dry, then confirm that it locks into place without forcing it.

Keep attachments ready between cleanings

Check the attachment you used before putting it away, especially after vacuuming upholstery, pet areas, or crumb-prone spaces. Store clean, dry tools together in a labeled container or on the vacuum’s holder so they do not collect floor debris. Keep attachments used in bathrooms or other higher-soil areas separate when practical.

Safety note

Always disconnect the vacuum from power before removing or cleaning attachments. Never place fingers into a powered brush, hose, opening, or moving mechanism, and do not wash any part unless the manufacturer says it is washable. Wear appropriate hand protection if sharp debris may be present, and stop if you find broken glass, needles, unknown material, damaged wiring, a cracked powered head, or exposed electrical contacts. Never mix cleaning chemicals. Filters, bags, brush rolls, hoses, wet-dry vacuum parts, and motorized heads may require separate instructions; do not treat them as ordinary washable attachments. Keep removed debris and small parts away from children and pets.
