Today’s Tip: Clear the Vacuum Brush Roll

Remove wrapped hair and thread from the vacuum’s brush roll so it can turn freely and pick up debris more effectively.

Published September 26, 2026

Hair, thread, and string can wind tightly around a vacuum’s brush roll. Today’s focused reset clears that buildup from a user-serviceable floor head so the roller can move as designed.

Your step-by-step brush-roll reset

  1. Switch the vacuum off, unplug it or remove its battery, and let the machine cool completely.
  2. Check the owner’s manual before opening the floor head. Place the vacuum on a stable surface and remove only parts identified as user-serviceable.
  3. Inspect the brush roll in good light. Use your fingers or the manufacturer’s cleaning tool to lift loose hair, thread, and lint away from the bristles.
  4. If the manual allows scissors, slide one tip carefully beneath a tangle and cut away from yourself, the belt, wires, and brush-roll surface. Pull the loosened debris out in small sections instead of forcing the roller.
  5. Check the accessible ends of the brush roll and the floor-head opening for remaining debris. Wipe the housing with a dry or lightly damp cloth only if the manufacturer permits it, keeping all electrical and moving parts dry.
  6. Reinstall every cover and fastener securely. Restore power only after all parts are correctly seated and completely dry.

Keep buildup manageable

Inspect the brush roll regularly, especially after cleaning pet hair or long fibers. Empty the canister or replace the bag and maintain filters on the schedule in the owner’s manual; these small habits make the next vacuum reset easier.

Safety note

Always disconnect the vacuum from power before touching the brush roll. Keep blades pointed away from your hands and never cut near a belt, wire, or electrical component. Do not force a stuck roller or remove a sealed part. Stop using the vacuum and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional if you find a damaged belt, exposed wire, cracked roller, burning smell, or other damage.
