Today’s Tip: Refresh Your Dishwasher Filter

Remove trapped food and residue from a removable dishwasher filter so it is ready for the next load.

Published September 24, 2026

A dishwasher can look clean while food particles and residue collect in the filter beneath the lower rack. Today’s focused task is to check and clean that filter—if your dishwasher has a removable one.

Your step-by-step filter refresh

  1. Make sure the dishwasher is off, empty, and completely cool. Check the owner’s manual to locate the filter and confirm that it is designed to be removed by the user.
  2. Slide out the lower rack. Look carefully for broken glass or sharp debris before reaching into the bottom of the dishwasher.
  3. Remove the filter exactly as the manufacturer directs. Note how the pieces fit together so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  4. Rinse loose food particles away with warm water. If the manual allows it, use a soft brush and a small amount of mild dish soap to loosen residue without damaging the filter screen.
  5. Wipe the filter opening and nearby accessible surface with a damp cloth, keeping debris out of the drain and avoiding electrical or mechanical parts.
  6. Rinse the filter, reinstall it securely, and replace the lower rack. Do not run the dishwasher until every filter piece is locked back into its correct position.

Make it a simple habit

Check the filter on the schedule recommended in your owner’s manual. Scrape large food pieces into the trash before loading dishes, but follow the detergent and dishwasher manufacturer’s guidance about pre-rinsing.

Safety note

Never reach blindly into the dishwasher base because broken glass or sharp utensils may be present. Do not force, remove, or scrub a part that the manual does not identify as user-serviceable. Avoid abrasive tools and harsh cleaners, never mix cleaning chemicals, and keep children and pets away while the rack and filter are removed.
