Today’s Tip: Refresh the Front-Load Washer Door Gasket

Clear lint, hair, moisture, and detergent residue from the rubber folds around a front-load washer door.

Published October 6, 2026

The flexible gasket around a front-load washer door can hold lint, hair, small objects, detergent residue, and moisture. Today’s focused reset cleans the accessible folds and helps the gasket dry between wash days.

Your step-by-step washer-gasket refresh

  1. Make sure the washer is empty, turned off, and cool. Keep children and pets away, and check the manufacturer’s care instructions before cleaning.
  2. Put on household cleaning gloves. Open the door and use a flashlight to inspect the visible gasket folds before reaching inside, watching for pins, coins, or other sharp objects.
  3. Remove loose lint, hair, and small items carefully by hand or with a disposable towel. Do not force, stretch, detach, or puncture the rubber gasket.
  4. Wipe the accessible gasket surface and folds with a soft cloth and the cleaning method approved by the washer manufacturer. Apply product to the cloth instead of pouring or spraying liquid into the gasket, drum openings, controls, or door lock.
  5. Use a separate damp cloth if the care instructions call for residue to be removed. Pay attention to the lower fold, where water and detergent buildup often collect.
  6. Dry the gasket, glass, and door edge thoroughly with a clean towel. Confirm that the gasket sits evenly and that no cloth, debris, or small object remains in the folds.
  7. Leave the washer door slightly open only when the manufacturer recommends it and the open door will not create a hazard for children, pets, or foot traffic. Return all products and cloths to safe storage.

Keep the gasket easier to maintain

Remove damp laundry promptly, use the correct amount and type of detergent for the machine, and wipe visible moisture after the final load of the day. A quick gasket check each week can prevent residue and forgotten items from accumulating.

Safety note

Never clean the gasket while the washer is running or allow children or pets to enter or play near the drum. Do not mix bleach, ammonia, vinegar, or other cleaning products. Use only a method approved for the appliance, provide ventilation when the product label requires it, and keep moisture away from controls and electrical parts. Stop using the washer and arrange qualified service if the gasket is torn, loose, leaking, heavily stained with suspected mold, or trapping water because of a drainage problem.
