Today’s Tip: Refresh Your Ice-Cube Trays Before the Next Batch

Wash, inspect, and fully dry reusable ice-cube trays so the next batch starts in a clean, food-safe container.

Published October 31, 2026

Reusable ice-cube trays can collect freezer crumbs, drips, odors, and residue around their rims, lids, and flexible corners. Today’s focused reset treats each tray as a food-contact item and gives it a careful wash before the next batch of ice.

Your step-by-step ice-tray reset

  1. Wash your hands, clear a clean section of the counter, and read the tray manufacturer’s care instructions. Confirm whether the tray, lid, silicone insert, or other removable part is dishwasher-safe, hand-wash-only, or subject to a temperature limit.
  2. Remove the tray without placing it on a dirty freezer shelf or floor. Empty unwanted ice into the sink or an appropriate container, and discard any cubes with visible debris or an unusual odor instead of returning them to the freezer.
  3. Separate only the removable pieces designed to come apart. Inspect the tray, lid, seams, and flexible sections for cracks, chips, peeling material, deep scratches, trapped residue, or a damaged seal; replace a food-contact item that cannot be cleaned properly or is no longer intact.
  4. Wash each approved piece by the labeled method using clean water, a soft sponge or brush, and a food-contact-safe dish detergent. Pay attention to cube corners, fill lines, lid grooves, handles, and the underside without using abrasive pads or sharp tools.
  5. Rinse away detergent as directed and place the pieces on a clean drying rack or fresh towel. Let every surface, groove, and lid dry completely before reassembly so moisture is not trapped during storage.
  6. Reassemble the dry tray, fill it with potable water without overfilling, and close the lid if provided. Carry it level with clean hands and place it on a clean, stable freezer shelf away from leaking packages or loose debris.

Keep the next batch easier to manage

Use a lid when the tray includes one, wipe fresh freezer spills promptly, and keep open trays away from uncovered food. Rotate trays instead of topping off partially used cubes, and schedule another wash whenever a tray picks up residue, debris, or an unfamiliar odor.

Safety note

Follow the tray manufacturer’s temperature and cleaning instructions; do not use boiling water, a dishwasher, microwave, or harsh product unless the item is specifically approved for it. Never mix cleaning chemicals or use bleach, disinfectant, abrasive powder, solvents, or scented household cleaner on a food-contact tray unless the product label and tray instructions expressly permit that use and required rinsing. Do not use a cracked, chipped, peeling, or degraded tray, and do not pry ice loose with a knife or other sharp object. Keep small removable pieces away from children and pets. If the freezer contains leaked raw food, broken glass, an unknown substance, or extensive contamination, isolate the affected items and follow the appliance and food-safety guidance appropriate to the situation rather than treating it as a routine tray wash.
