Today’s Tip: Refresh Your Laundry Basket

Clear lint and residue from a washable laundry basket, including its handles and base, before returning clean clothes.

Published October 16, 2026

A laundry basket carries more than clothes: lint, dust, and small traces of detergent or damp fabric can collect around its base and handles. Today’s focused reset cleans the basket itself so freshly washed laundry has a clean, dry place to land.

Your step-by-step laundry basket refresh

  1. Empty the basket completely and separate any clean clothing from items waiting to be washed. Check for loose objects before reaching into corners, and place the basket on a stable, washable surface.
  2. Read the care instructions and identify the material. A solid plastic basket may tolerate washing, while woven fibers, wood, fabric liners, coated metal, and attached components can require different methods. Inspect for cracks, splinters, sharp edges, or loose handles.
  3. Remove loose lint and dust with a soft brush or vacuum brush attachment. Work along the bottom, ventilation openings, handle recesses, and underside without forcing debris into joints.
  4. For a washable basket, wipe with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap using a soft cloth. Clean the inside first, then the rim, handles, exterior, and base, folding to a clean cloth section as dirt transfers. Use only a lightly dampened cloth or another manufacturer-approved method on materials that should not be soaked.
  5. Rinse or wipe away soap residue as directed. If there is a removable fabric liner, wash it separately according to its care label rather than putting the entire basket in the washer.
  6. Dry the basket thoroughly, including seams, the base, and handle recesses. Let any liner dry completely before reinstalling it, and return clean laundry only when the entire basket is dry.

Keep the basket ready for clean clothes

Give the basket a quick lint check during laundry day. If possible, use separate baskets for dirty and clean items, or clean the shared basket between those uses. Do not leave damp towels sitting in it for extended periods.

Safety note

Never mix cleaning chemicals or use an unlabeled product. Follow the material-care instructions, avoid abrasive pads and sharp tools, and keep products away from children and pets. Do not overload the basket or carry it where it blocks your view of stairs. Remove a basket with broken handles, cracks, splinters, or sharp edges from use. This routine is for ordinary household soil; laundry or baskets contaminated with body fluids or hazardous substances need appropriate, separate handling guidance.
