A range hood filter can collect grease, dust, and cooking residue long before the buildup is easy to see. Today’s focused reset cleans a removable, washable filter while protecting the hood’s electrical parts and finish.
Your step-by-step range hood filter refresh
- Turn off the cooktop and range hood, let every surface cool completely, and make sure no burner or flame can be activated while you work.
- Read the hood manufacturer’s instructions to confirm the filter is removable and washable. Some charcoal or specialty filters must be replaced rather than washed.
- Put on household cleaning gloves. Support the filter with both hands as you release it, watching for sharp metal edges and noting its correct direction for reinstallation.
- Remove loose dust with a soft brush or disposable towel. Keep debris away from food, cookware, burners, and the open hood housing.
- Wash the filter only by the method the manufacturer approves. If hand-washing is allowed, use warm water and a small amount of dish soap, gently working through the mesh without bending it. Do not put it in a dishwasher unless the instructions specifically permit it.
- Rinse away loosened residue when directed, then let the filter dry completely on a clean towel. Wipe the accessible exterior of the cool hood with a surface-approved cloth, applying product to the cloth instead of spraying toward vents, lights, controls, or the motor.
- Reinstall the fully dry filter in its original position and confirm that it is secure. Return the cooktop area to normal only after all tools, towels, and products are removed.
Keep grease from building up
Check the filter regularly based on how often and what you cook. Frequent frying or high-heat cooking may require more frequent attention. A light, scheduled cleaning is easier than removing a thick, sticky layer later.
Safety note
Never clean a hot hood or filter, work above an active burner, or spray liquid into the hood. Do not mix cleaning chemicals or use an unlabeled degreaser. Keep moisture away from the motor, wiring, lights, switches, plug, and outlets. Use a stable step stool only if necessary—never stand on the cooktop or a chair. Stop and arrange qualified service if the filter is damaged, will not lock securely, the hood sparks, wiring is exposed, or grease has reached inaccessible internal components.
