Today’s Tip: Refresh Your Reusable Grocery Bags

Remove crumbs, clean reusable shopping bags according to their care labels, and let them dry completely before storage.

Published September 23, 2026

Reusable grocery bags can collect crumbs, small spills, and moisture between shopping trips. Today’s quick task is to clean the bags you use most often and organize them so they are ready for your next trip.

Your step-by-step bag refresh

  1. Empty every pocket and turn each bag upside down over a trash can to remove loose crumbs and debris.
  2. Check the care label and separate machine-washable fabric bags from insulated, coated, or structured bags.
  3. Machine-wash washable bags using the labeled settings. For bags that should not go in the washer, wipe the interior and exterior with a cloth and a cleaner approved by the manufacturer.
  4. Pay extra attention to seams, bottom corners, handles, and any area where a spill occurred.
  5. Let every bag dry completely before folding or storing it. Leave insulated bags open until all interior moisture is gone.
  6. Store clean bags in a dry place, and keep one bag designated for raw meat, poultry, or seafood if you use reusable bags for those items.

Make the habit easier

Return clean bags to your vehicle or shopping area as soon as they are dry. Check for leaks or spills after every grocery trip instead of waiting for residue or odors to build up.

Food-safety note

Keep bags used for raw meat, poultry, seafood, household chemicals, or pet supplies separate from bags used for ready-to-eat foods. Wash your hands after handling a contaminated bag, follow its care label, and never store a bag while it is damp or still contains food residue.
