Today’s Tip: Refresh the Washing Machine Detergent Drawer

Clear detergent and softener residue from a removable dispenser drawer so it is clean, dry, and ready for the next load.

Published September 27, 2026

The detergent drawer can collect drips, damp residue, and product buildup even when the rest of the washer looks clean. Today’s focused task is to refresh this small area using the care instructions for your machine.

Your step-by-step detergent drawer refresh

  1. Make sure the washer is off, empty, and not running a cycle. Check the owner’s manual to confirm whether the dispenser drawer and inserts are designed to be removed by the user.
  2. Pull the drawer open slowly. If the manual shows a release tab, press it as directed and support the drawer with both hands as you remove it.
  3. Separate only the removable inserts identified in the manual. Rinse them with warm water and use a soft brush or cloth to loosen detergent and fabric-softener residue if the manufacturer permits it.
  4. Wipe the drawer itself, paying attention to corners, channels, and marked fill lines. Avoid abrasive scrubbers that could scratch the plastic or damage measurement markings.
  5. Use a lightly damp cloth to wipe the accessible dispenser opening. Keep water and cleaner away from controls, wiring, and any part the manual says not to touch.
  6. Dry the drawer, inserts, and opening completely. Reassemble every piece in the correct position and slide the drawer back into place without forcing it.

Make the next reset easier

Wipe fresh spills before they dry, measure laundry products instead of overfilling the compartments, and use only products approved for your washer. If the manufacturer recommends leaving the drawer slightly open between loads, doing so can help the area dry.

Safety note

Follow the washer manufacturer’s instructions before removing or cleaning any part. Never service the drawer while the machine is running, never mix cleaning chemicals, and do not pour cleaner into the dispenser opening unless the manual specifically directs you to do so. Stop and contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance professional if the drawer is stuck, cracked, leaking, or surrounded by damaged electrical parts.
