Today’s Tip: Clean the Trash Can Rim and Lid

Refresh the often-missed rim, lid, and foot pedal to remove drips, crumbs, and everyday buildup.

Published September 22, 2026

A fresh liner can hide the mess that collects around the top of a trash can. Today, spend a few minutes cleaning the rim, lid, handles, and foot pedal—areas that are touched often and can catch small spills.

Your quick trash can reset

  1. Remove the bag and empty any loose crumbs into it before tying it closed.
  2. Check the trash can manufacturer’s care instructions, especially for stainless steel, coated, or sensor-operated models.
  3. Use a disposable towel or dedicated cleaning cloth to remove visible debris from the rim, lid, handles, and foot pedal.
  4. Wipe each washable surface with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap, or use a cleaner approved for the material. Apply cleaner to the cloth instead of spraying electronic sensors or moving parts.
  5. Wipe away residue and dry every surface thoroughly, including the groove where the lid meets the can.
  6. Wash your hands, then insert a fresh liner only after the rim and interior edge are completely dry.

Keep odors from building up

Clean small drips when you notice them and avoid overfilling the bag. A weekly wipe of the rim and lid is easier than removing dried-on residue later.

Safety note

Wear gloves when handling waste, keep children and pets away while cleaning, and wash your hands afterward. Never mix cleaning chemicals. Do not spray liquid into automatic-lid sensors, batteries, hinges, or foot-pedal mechanisms, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for electronic trash cans.
