Today’s Tip: Give Your Utensil Drawer a Fresh Start

Clear hidden crumbs from one kitchen drawer, clean the organizer, and put everything back only when dry.

Published September 20, 2026

Today’s small cleaning project is the utensil drawer. Crumbs can collect underneath the organizer even when the counter looks clean. Focus on just one drawer for a manageable fresh start.

Your step-by-step drawer reset

  1. Empty the drawer onto a clean towel. Carefully set sharp utensils aside where children and pets cannot reach them.
  2. Lift out the organizer and remove any loose liner. Brush crumbs into a dustpan, reaching the back corners and the space under the tray.
  3. Check the organizer’s care instructions. Wash washable trays with mild dish soap and water; wipe materials that should not be submerged with a lightly damp cloth instead.
  4. Wipe the drawer interior with a soft cloth lightly dampened with a cleaner suitable for its finish. Avoid soaking wood, seams, or drawer slides.
  5. Dry the drawer and organizer thoroughly. Replace a reusable liner only when it is clean and completely dry.
  6. Return clean, dry utensils in small groups so each item is easy to find. Wash any utensil that picked up dirt during the reset before putting it back.

Keep it easy

Take a quick look under the organizer the next time you notice crumbs. Cleaning one small spot at a time makes kitchen upkeep more manageable.

Safety and surface care

Never reach blindly into a drawer containing knives. Handle blades carefully and store them securely. Follow product and material-care labels, do not mix cleaners, and do not put an organizer in the dishwasher unless its manufacturer says it is dishwasher-safe.
